Replying to Anurag More of India Infoline, Dr Batra says, "Homeopathy forms about 14% of total alternative market with an annual growth rate of 20-25%."

Brief us about the healthcare scenario in India according to you? How homeopathy is placed vis-à-vis allopathic treatment?
Ayurveda is more than 3000 years old, while the conventional medical system is over 1500years old. Homeopathy is the most modern of all sciences. Over 200 years old, Homeopathywas founded by the great German physician Samuel Hahnemann in 1796. Hence Homeopathy isthe most modern of all current forms of medication.

Unfortunately in India, itis clubbed with the Indian Systems of Medicines (ISM). Being associated with Ayurveda andUnani medicine creates the perception of Homeopathy being old or ancient. In fact,Homeopathy is the second largest practiced system of medicine in the world, according tothe World Health Organization (WHO).

Homeopathy came to Indiacourtesy Maharajah Ranjit Singh of Punjab.  It forms about 14% of totalalternative market with an annual growth rate of 20-25% versus pharma which has a 10%growth.  Homeopathy market in India is worth Rs12.5bn.

In Mumbai, 52% ofpopulation use Allopathy; 39% use Homeopathy; 9% use other medicines like Ayurvedic, Unanietc.

The Government of Indiadeveloped homeopathic system of medicine by setting up Homeopathic enquiry committee wayback in 1948. Today it is accepted as one of the National Systems ofMedicine.  There are over 3,00,000 qualified homeopath practitioners, 7500government clinics, 307 hospitals, 180 teaching institutes affiliated to universitiesprevalent in India specific to Homeopathy.

A current survey in sevenIndian cities revealed that 48% people trust homeopathy as the preferred choice oftreatment.

Homeopathy today ispracticed by doctors who are trained for 5 ½ years in a medical college. They learnsubjects like Pathology, Clinical Medicine, Surgery, and Gynaecology. They also haveenough clinical experience to deal with cases as most of the colleges are attached tohospitals.

The basic education in boththe sciences is similar. However, the quality of training in allopathic colleges is muchbetter in India as the training provided in the 125 homeopathic colleges in India is stillnot standardized.

Abroad, Homeopathy is asuper specialty and therefore you have homeopathic dentists, homeopathic cardiologists, homeopathic vets and homeopathic paediatricians. Therefore, the assumption thathomeopathic doctors do not know to diagnose or investigate is incorrect.

While Allopathy and theother systems of medicine only remove the symptoms or kill the bacteria, without buildingthe immunity of the patient, Homeopathy builds the natural immunity of the patient ingeneral and therefore keeps the body healthy and protects it from repeated bouts ofillnesses. Homeopathic medicines have many a time proved to act as prophylactic medicinesfor various epidemic diseases; for e.g. the use of Belladonna to prevent scarlet fever andEupatorium Perfoliatum for dengue fever.

Are people adopting homeopathy more now and why?
Homeopathy is a mind and body medicine. It treats the root cause of the problem andimproves body resistance with no side-effects. Homeopaths consider the patient's totalexperience, both mental and physical symptoms, and the individual's emotional state, thusensuring long-term benefits. Treatment targets the root of the problem withoutindiscriminately affecting the surrounding area. There are no dietary restrictions.

While allopathy offers thesame formula for the same disease, Homeopathy offers several alternative remedies for eachcondition. The medicine selected out of a range of more than 3000 different dilutions, istargeted to the individual problem. The white pills serve only as a vehicle for transferof the medicine. Both the curative effects and symptomatology of each medicine are triedout and proven only on healthy human beings, not rats and rabbits, making homeopathyuniquely reliable. Homeopathic medicines contain very, very small quantities of thesubstances called potencies, prepared in a special way. These high dilutions not onlyenhance their curative properties, but avoid undesirable side effects.

Homeopathic medicines arecompletely safe with no unwanted side effects and they are non-addictive. They are safefor babies, children and elderly people. There are more than 2,000 homeopathic medicines. They are usually presented in the form of granules, capsules, tablets or liquids, allprepared in modern laboratories in scientific conditions to the highest quality standards. They are largely made from pure, natural, vegetable sources. Granules and tablets aresweet tasting and they dissolve easily.

Homeopathy is a completesystem of medicine which assists the natural tendency of the human body to heal itself. Itacknowledges that all symptoms of ill health are a mere manifestation of the disharmonywithin the whole person and that it is the patient that requires treatment and not thedisease. It has been in existence worldwide for more than 200 years and its popularity isrising in the present day. Homeopathy not only helps restore the sick to health, it alsooffers a method of maintaining health and preventing illness. It is a subtle yet effectivetherapy that can correct small imbalances long before the appearance of the more serioussymptoms which denote the onset of a particular disease. It obviates the need for surgeryin certain cases of warts, piles, fissures, tonsillitis, ovarian cysts or kidney stones.Fewer expensive tests and procedures are required.

Treatment is cost effectiveand complete. It works on minimum dosage. The more dilute the substance, the greater itseffect or cure. According to Hahnemann, homeopathic substance, even in very tiny amounts, worked by stimulating the ‘vital life force’, a type of energy present in allliving things.

An independent researchcommissioned by Dr Batras' seven years ago in Bangalore and Bombay showed that more andmore people choose homeopathy as the first choice of treatment especially in chronicdiseases such as asthma, arthritis, chronic allergies, eczema, skin problems, COPD and agamut of stress related disorders.

In India medical facilities are still out of reach for many. What suggestions would you give to improve this situation?
Since homeopathic remedies boost the body’s immunity, they play a vital role inpreventive medicine in addition to therapeutic medicine. Homeopathy, being mind and bodymedicine, can facilitate a restoration of physical health along with a catharsis ofemotions to improve the psychological health. Homeopathy is an ideal option to in times ofcost -cutting to stay healthy.
